Panhead Catahoulas Bobtails
Louisiana Catahoulas are on occassion born with a naturally bobbed tail. The length of the tail can vary quite a bit, but it will noticeably grow to a point, as oppossed to the "lopped off" appearance of dogs whose tails have been "docked". The bobtail is a product of the unique blend of genetic soup that has produced this wonderful breed, and to our eye the rare bobtails are special.
Persons considering the purchase of a bobtail Catahoula (and we have a couple for sale right now) should be aware that the bobtail is not universally considered a good thing. For instance, in NALC shows, it is considered a fault and a point is deducted for the bobtail, HOWEVER , the UKC has now changed the wording of the Catahoula Standards to accept a bobtail of any length. ANY N.A.L.C. registered catahoula can easily be registered with the UKC .So if you fall in love with a bobtail and still want to show it it IS now possible! Most folks are not showing their dog, and we have spoken with many Catahoula owners over the years who, like ourselves, have wonderful memories of their bobtail Catahoulas.
Pictured below is Panhead's Amos, born in Febuary of 07'. He is looking through the fence at his granddam Mary Jane (Panhead's M.J. Lucky), also a bobtail.
