Why Dogs Cost More I have been putting off this announcement,
but am stuck with it. Due to circumstances which
are, I swear, beyond our control, our puppies in
the future will be priced at $300. Anyone who has
in the past bought a puppy can still buy another
as needed for $200. The most reasonably priced
veterinarian in Panama City wants nearly $60 per
puppy for the required health certificate, our
$10 sacks of dogfood now approach $15, thanks to
our government's inspired embrace of corn ethanol
as the new fuel (ever hear of switchgrass?),
vaccines go up constantly, plus I am a
construction worker and there is a recession and
real estate collapse in Florida. It's not pretty
but there it is. If Panhead Catahoulas is to
continue, the folks who support us by buying
puppies will have to pay more. I don't know how
this is going to work out, Lord knows we are not
the only household dealing with a tanking
economy, and raising prices during a recession is
not a sure fire strategy for success, but I am
hopeful. We are hopeful of producing this year
some of our finest dogs ever, and I am definitely
excited about that!

Why dogs cost more, continued
Something else you may not realize about Pan
head kennel is that we are currently sup
porting to the grave four spayed females (Ro
sebud, Hennesy, Eclipse and Dixie Blue) who hav
e made some wonderful pupppies over the years tha
t have been sent all over America, but are now
enjoying their retirement years. We enter int
o a lifetime relationship and commitment to our
dogs, who are truly family members. I just saw
the Oprah special on puppy mills the other day
, and I promise you, that is not us. If you cho
ose to buy a Panhead dog, you are not only get
ting yourself an excellent dog, but are hel
ping to support the old girls and over the hil
l studs who have brought so much joy to so man
y over the years. Our dogs do not live in cag
es, but in spacious pens with pine trees for sha
de and room to run and dig. Please do not buy a d
og from a pet store, as this only encourages the
warehousing, stockpiling, and other inhumane tre
atment being visited upon innocent animals. If
you have any doubt that our dogs are happy, lov
ed creatures, you are welcome to stop by the hou
se and look over the situation for yourself. No
doubt we could sell more dogs if we shipped the
m, but the inherent wrongness of taking a pup fro
m the litter and mother and sticking it in a box
to be flown wherever is obvious to me, if not
to all. If you want one of our dogs, you wil
l have to come to the house and pick it up. Hav
ing gone to so much trouble, we are confident you
will be a master worthy of the dog.
